The Auto Body Technology Program at BTEC is certified through NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) to ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Standards and uses I-CAR curriculum. These certification standards help prepare students for entry-level auto body careers and/or post-secondary automotive training. The collision repair industry demands more highly-skilled workers as technology improves. Collision repair shops grew in size and number of employees between 2001 and 2016.
Occupations: There are numerous types of jobs in the auto body industry. Technical jobs include auto body technician, mechanic, tire technician, and glass and windshield repair. More administrative-related jobs include body shop manager, automotive painter, vehicle inspectors, estimator automobile damage, insurance agents, tow truck drivers, and detailers. Each of these jobs requires specific skills and have unique responsibilities and duties. Almost all of the positions require you to have a clean driving record and a strong interest in cars and other vehicles.
Typical Salary: Collision repair technicians earn a national median salary of about $54,890 per year ($26.39 per hour), with regional averages in Virginia tracking around $59,553 annually. Pay varies based on your experience level, location, and whether you are paid hourly, flat-rate, or with performance bonuses
Employment Outlook: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment growth of about 2 to 3 percent, with roughly 16,000 to 17,000 job openings projected each year.
