Computer Systems Technology I


Students enter the world of computer technology and gain practical experience in assembling a computer system. Students will install, configure, and secure various operating systems. Students will troubleshoot computers and peripherals and use system tools and diagnostic software. They develop skills in computer networking and resource sharing. In addition, students explore the relationships between internal and external computer components. This introductory level class requires no previous computer skills and is available to grades 9-12.


Computer Systems Technology II


This advanced course provides students with training in procedures for optimizing and troubleshooting concepts for computer systems, subsystems, and networks. Students explore the following:


• Basic network design and connectivity

• Network documentation

• Network limitations and weaknesses

• Network security, standards and protocols


Students will gain a basic understanding of emerging technologies including unified communications, mobile, cloud, and virtualization technologies. The course prepares students for postsecondary education and training and a successful career in information technology. Upon successful completion of the course, students will take Testout PC Pro industry certification. Occupations: Helpdesk Technician, Computer Repair Technician, Technical Support Specialist, Warranty Repair Technician, Mobile Device Repair Technician, Network Cable Installation Specialist


 

Typical Salary in Virginia: $26,000- $80,000 depending on education level and specialization


Employment Outlook: The Information Technology cluster is projected to expand by 17 percent between 2014 and 2024, which is the second highest percentage of growth among all clusters in the Commonwealth. This exceeds the 12 percent expected average growth nationally among all occupations in this cluster, based on Trailblazers analysis of information from the Bureau of Labor StatisticsThis link takes you out of the Virginia Department of Education website. In 2014, this cluster employed over 190,300 workers in the commonwealth. By 2024, that number is projected to be slightly more than 222,700, which represents an increase of nearly 32,400 workers during the decade.



Certification:


Students are required to take the Testout PC Pro Certification in CST II. However based on student performance and interest many optional certifications are available to be earned through Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA, Linux, Mac, Virginia STAR, and our partnership with Radford University.
