Students who have the desire to work inside and outside in all ranges of weather, students who like to work with their hands to build and create various housing related products. These students should be creative and organized, and able to work quickly and calmly under pressure should explore exciting training and career opportunities the Building Trades program has to offer.


The Building Trades program is a two (2) year program that prepares students for entry-level employment in the construction industry and/or continues training through post-secondary education programs at the apprentice, associates, or baccalaureate level.


Students learn about Brick and Block masonry from laborer to mason job duties. Carpentry including footings to the finished structure. Electrical work from the safety aspect to installing conductors and devices and wiring of main panels for residential wiring. Plumbing will include DWV piping, water piping and how the plumbing system operates within the structure to remove waste materials from the home. Students engage in planning, code information and constructing projects that relate to the residential construction field. Students will have the opportunity to compete at district state and national level in any trade or a combination of the trades through the student organization SkillsUSA. As a component of the program, students will receive a 10hour OSHA Construction industry card. Students will also be taking ICC certification testing.


 


Typical Salary in Virginia: $23,000- $95,000 depending on education level and specialization
