The Auto Service Technology Program at BTEC is certified through NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) to ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Standards. These certifications standards help prepare students for entry-level automotive and diesel careers and/or post-secondary automotive training.
Occupations: Course completers have many areas in the automotive service industry to seek employment: Car/truck dealerships: Lubrication and general maintenance technician, tire and wheel service.
Entry level/trainee positions: Alignment technician, Engine repair (includes machine shop), vehicle diagnostics (specialize use of general scan-tool and vehicle specific scanners), Transmission and drivetrain, Exhaust systems, apprentice Diesel truck and equipment technician, Auto parts specialist/sales, Independent tech/owner and Aftermarket accessory installer.
Typical Salary in Virginia: According to several salary surveys: The average hourly rate for an Automotive general service technician in Roanoke Valley is approximately $18.00 per hour. This is approximately 6% higher than the national average for an Automotive general service technician which is around $17.00 per hour. Total salaries for most Automotive general service technicians in Roanoke range from $25,000 to $50,000 annually.
Employment Outlook: Employment of automotive service technicians is projected to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Job opportunities for qualified job seekers should be very good. (US Department of Labor)
Certifications: Auto Service I-II completers will participate in the listed testing areas:
S/P2: Safety Pollution and Prevention - shop safety certificates are good for 12 months from their test pass date. All Auto Service students are required to pass all safety modules and tests.
Student ASE certifications - administered to AST-II students only. Students are tested in the following areas: Engine Repair, Steering and suspension, Brakes, Electrical Electronic Systems, Engine Performance and MLR (maintenance and light repair).
Virginia State Inspection Class A license - the written and practical test is administered to those AST-II students that meet the following qualifications. The students must be a senior, be at least 18 years old by May 31st of that testing year, enrolled in AST-II or AST-III and have to have met all the criteria to fully pass the course and all required competencies.
*Note: All second year AST-II students participate in the classroom and shop portions of the Virginia State Inspection course. Students are all required to take and pass the practice written and practical (hands-on) tests.
Dual Enrollment option: Students will also have the availability to gain college credit each semester by participating in our Dual Enrollment program through Virginia Western Community College’s Auto Service Technology program. The course numbers are as follows;
